Hope's Birthday Desk
My granddaughter, Hope, was having her 5th birthday August 2004 and her mother suggested that I might make a desk for her. Rather than start completely from scratch, I went to the two Salvation Army stores and then to the Goodwill store looking for something. At the Goodwill place I found this desk for $12.95. It had been delt with by someone thinking they could refinish it but they stopped. As you can see the desk was quite needy.
I pitched the drawers and planed down the top and used it for the substrate for the top of oak plywood. I might mention here that all the materials used in this desk rehab were used or salvaged. The drawers were made from scratch and have machine cut dovetails on front and back. The drawer pulls were made from an old computer case which was sheet, mild steel and the pulls were wound with copper wire I got from a dumpster at a job site. Click here for closeup of two of the pulls. The drawer fronts were made of premavera crating and the drawer sides were salvaged pine. The large, bottom left drawer sides were made from some old pine flooring. I pretty well gutted the thing and made the face frames you can see in one of the pictures. Now, I was also asked about a chair. Well, the chair I got as a part of a set of 4 from a yard sale for $10/each. I made new seatcovers and sprayed on paint to match the desk.
