Projects Page

I began serious woodworking in June 1999 upon retirement from 35 years of public school science teaching..  Some people start woodworking with projects that require a skill level beyond their means.  As a consequence, they are disappointed with the results and quit.  I have tried to avoid this pitfall by working on projects that will build my skill level.  Fortunately, I have been  able to acquire some very good tools.  Some of the finishes on the projects are the results of some experimentation.  The finishing process has been my greatest aggravation. Many of my projects are made from salvaged primavera(click here to find out more).

These five box-joint boxes were made from salvaged pine and finished with fruitwood stain and satin poly.  The bottoms are salvaged wafer board.  Mission style coffee table is stained with aniline dye and finish coat of polyurethane. The wood is primavera.  The top is bread-boarded and pinned with square pegs of walnut.  The walnut was cut into pegs from some old plaques I bought at a garage sale.

Kate is admiring the doll cradle I made for her from primavera.  Note the patches on the end and the hand-cut dovetails. The wood was salvaged from pallets that once held aluminum foil.  The finish leaves something to be desired. The stain used was a cherry-walnut mixture. These are nested mission style tables.  They are made from primavera and stained with asphaltum and cherry gel.  The clear coat is lacquer. My finishing skills have improved over the cradle project.

These shaker benches were made from salvaged pine.  The bottom two benches have 7 layers of  'stuff'; dark oak stain, two sealer,  undercoat paint, liquid hide glue(to crackle the top coat), top coat and dark finishing wax. This tabouret was made with primavara.  Note the wedged thru tenons on the top and the pegged tenons on the legs.
