This is Izzy Calthreaux & she is 17"x23". Izzy dropped out of high school in Pittsburgh and moved to Memphis where she is an 'entertainer.' The wire outlining her face is flattened hanger wire and the other sheet metal is from a microwave oven. The stringy stuff in her hair is something I dug out of a dumpster.
Eve's Downfall is made from 6 gauge fence wire. The base was made from a tv table I found by the curb in someone's trash. This simple sculpture is about 5"x6". |
Ellese is 8"x16" and is made from hanger wire brazed lengthwise. The brazed wire was then ground to give the outline a script-like line. The red background pattern was made using a paint soaked piece of crocheted table cloth.
Ménage à trois is 13"x15" and is made from scrap pieces of copper, brass and steel. The background is a suede paint finish. It was a little difficult taking a picture of the polished metal and avoid reflections, however, a reflection can be seen in the copper on the left.
Seven is 7"x26" and is made from polished, galvanized ducting. The background is a suede paint finish. The mounting board is the face of a junked drawer I found at the dump. Color fringes can be seen in the polished metal and are, probably, reflections of some sort & are not seen when viewed live. The figure was cut from the sheet metal with a jeweler's saw and bent back. This bending produced some annoying puckers in the metal making it difficult to attach to the backing.. The piece appears distorted due to the camera angle. Many small imperfections were left in the piece to maintain the metaphor of the crafting process.
Hangon is 8"x4"x4" and is made from a piece of roof(gutter)flashing. The little figure is about 2" tall and was cut from the upper section with a jeweler's saw then folded down. This piece is kind of an experimental thing.
Reflection is 8"x8"x6" and is made from the same stuff described above. The figures you might recognize from the Ménage à trois shown above. A jeweler's saw was used to fabricate this experiment sculpture.
Lucy's Enigma is 13"x19" and is made from scrap metal sheet, hanger wire and fabric. The original "Liquor Guns & Ammo" sign once adorned The Bass Pro Shop at Business Loop and Range Line here in Columbia. The shop is no longer but the sign lives on at the famous Shakespeare's Pizza by the university campus. The sign is pictured on one of Kent Anderson's books, "Liquor Guns & Ammo."
I got this wild hair and did this bit in the dust on the back window of my truck cap... a bit transient but that's okay...
Brenda Star* Reporter is 14"x14" and is made from hanger wire, fence wire and sheet metal from a microwave oven. Some may recognize this figure as the Starr of a famous comic strip. Roy Lichtenstein had fun with comic strips and so did I.
With The Simpsons movie coming out I thought the star, Homer, worthy of my consideration. The piece is about 14"x16" and is made from fence wire, sheet metal and cardboard from some old file folders. The backing was a piece of half inch floor underlayment(particle board like stuff). Homer will be placed down at Lakota Coffee Co. so the text will be relevant to the coffee shop.
